Digital Textbooks: A Smarter, More Affordable Way to Learn

In 2017, ahead of many of its peer institutions, ذكذكتسئµ made the important decision to switch to digital textbooks and course materials.

The reason for this change was because the University understood that to make college more affordable, the high cost of textbooks could not be overlooked. Research shows that when students can’t afford required materials, they often start the term at a disadvantage compared to peers who can. Those without access to their textbooks are less prepared, less engaged, and more likely to struggle academically. Rising textbook prices have made this problem worse, even as digital and open educational resources have helped lower costs in recent years.

Today, most students say cost is the main reason they skip or delay buying textbooks, and both students and faculty recognize the impact this has on learning. Research shows that students who read assigned materials in advance perform better, and instructors overwhelmingly agree that access to course materials leads to higher grades. By exploring affordable options like digital course materials colleges can help ensure that all students have an equal opportunity to learn and succeed. Also, to ensure access to the digital course materials, the University provides incoming freshmen students with a new laptop, the cost of which is included in their general fees.

Since ذكذكتسئµ provides free digital textbooks each semester through D2L for enrolled courses, there is no opt-out option. These materials are available immediately within your courses at the start of the semester, ensuring all students have access from day one. Because textbooks and materials are provided at no cost through this system, they are not available for individual purchase.
