Cleapatra Tounkara is an African potter based in Pennsylvania. At age 16, she began her pottery education in Nazareth Area High School and spent years teaching herself innovative techniques in pottery, specifically in glaze experimentation. Her work has been displayed in various shows in the Eagle Gallery, located within Nazareth Area High School. She continues her pottery education as a Fine Arts undergrad major at 羞羞视频 and has plans to eventually open her own shop.
I practice a multitude of different art forms, but whenever I am asked what my medium is, I first and foremost introduce myself as a potter. I became a potter the first time I worked with clay. I fell in love with how tangible it was, as opposed to one-dimensional art forms that require the illusion of depth. 聽Clay isn’t as complicated: carve if you want less, build on if you want more. To me, clay is a grounding force. It is made of earth and water, two fundamental elements that work together in harmony. Add air and the clay dries. Add fire and the clay hardens and immortalizes. Is it said in the Tao Ting Ching that “each separate being in the universe returns to the common source. Returning to the source is serenity.” As a Taoist, I think of clay as a symbol for the common source, which is the earth we all occupy. I represent this in my work, with multiple pieces following an air, water, earth, and fire theme. The way these elements interact with each other creates balance, which is the ultimate goal of Taoism. I find it freeing to experiment with how these elements delicately work together to produce a piece of art. I never really have a clear vision for how my pieces will turn out. I pay attention to how the clay reacts to exposure to different elements and adjust my movements accordingly. I work with the clay and the clay works with me, and it is through this harmonious collaboration that art is born.
